Howard H. Hamamoto (BBA ’53)

Howard H. Hamamoto, former president of AMFAC Properties, currently splits his time between his real estate development and investment holdings, chairing fundraising events and serving on community boards.
After receiving his BBA from the University of Hawai‘i, Hamamoto began honing his management skills in banking, finance, real estate and land management.
He served nine years at Bank of Hawai‘i as a credit officer and branch manager. In 1964, Hamamoto joined AMFAC Properties rising from manager of the Commercial Loan Department to president from 1970 until 1979.
Under Hamamoto’s tenure, AMFAC developed long-range planning for the conversion of agricultural-zoned lands into urban zoning and expanded into real estate development of residential apartments, condominiums, a shopping center, single family residential subdivision, light industrial park, golf courses and office buildings.
A third-generation Japanese American, Hamamoto is committed to serving his community. He serve as chairman of the Crown Prince Akihito Scholarship Foundation and was honored to host the Crown Prince at a reception in July to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Crown Prince Akihito Scholarship Program. Hamamoto is also a member of the Shidler College of Business 60th Anniversary steering committee.
He currently serves as director of the Japan-America Society of Hawai‘i and trustee of Maunalani Foundation and Nursing Center. He served as trustee of the University of Hawai‘i Foundation from 1986-1998. Hamamoto also served in the United States Air Force earning the rank of Lieutenant.
